A recent gold, copper, silver project has arisen in one of the three government recognized Indian reservation areas of Alaska. The Tetlin gold, copper, and silver project, controlled by Contango ORE Inc., began sampling the area of Tetlin in 2009 and discovered significant amounts of gold, copper, and silver in 2012. Contango ORE has decided to hand over the project to a mining company who is more capable in starting a mine. In September 2014, Contango ORE has announced a Master Agreement with Royal Gold Inc. At this time, it's still unclear whether mining is confirmed for the future.
When asked her opinion on if the mining begins, what do you think of the affects on Tok's economy will be, Michelle James replied,"There would be more people in Tok, and more job opportunities. Everywhere would get more business because more people would more to Tok and Tetlin to work."
This is great news for many residents and businesses of the community. If the project is executed, there would be no doubt that Tok's economy would greatly rise. Many of the small businesses will greatly benefit from the mining with the attraction of new workers and residents. More students would enroll in Tok school rising the demand of staff and school supplies. The sports teams will be able to expand with more players, with the possibility of new sports starting. The spark of this project may give a spurt of life to a seemingly dying community.
